Stormwater Pollution Prevention

The College of New Jersey maintains a Public Complex Stormwater General Permit, which is issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. As a condition of this permit, The College of New Jersey is required to educate members of the campus community what measures are to be taken to prevent stormwater pollution.  These measures reflect our on-going commitment to protecting this beautiful campus and the environment.

Stormwater is water that comes from precipitation events such as rain and snow.  Stormwater drains collect this water and direct it through underground pipes towards drainage areas or bodies of water so that flooding does not occur in developed areas.  As the water drains, anything else that enters this system can be carried with the water to its discharge location.

The College’s stormwater system drains mostly into the two campus lakes, Ceva and Sylva, directly from the drain to the lakes. The water is not treated or filtered prior to entering the lakes. The drains that you see outside on the campus are stormwater drains. These drains are often labeled with fish symbols and/or the words “drains to lake”.   Drains inside the buildings drain to a sewer system that is not connected to the stormwater system.

Pollution Prevention

In order to prevent the pollution of groundwater and surface water bodies from surface run-off and other non-point sources, The College requests the following of the campus community:

  • Do not feed the wildlife, including geese and ducks.
  • Do not wash your car on campus.
  • Properly dispose of pet wastes in the regular trash.
  • Do not place any wastes in stormwater inlets or in areas leading to stormwater inlets.
  • Dispose of all wastes properly.

As efforts to reduce stormwater pollution rely on every member of this community, it is imperative that all members be aware of what they can do to help prevent stormwater pollution. The brochure links below provide you with additional stormwater pollution prevention information that can be used every day, both as a member of this campus community as well as a resident in your home community.

Thank you for your partnership with this important regulated environmental initiative.

Stormwater Program Mechanisms:

  1. Pet Waste Control – it is required to pick up after your pet and place it into an exterior trash can.
  2. Wildlife Feeding Control – In order to not encourage wildlife to hang out here, we can not feed the wildlife.
  3. Litter Control – It is illegal to litter and all trash and recycling must be placed into the appropriate container.
  4. Improper Disposal Control – All trash must be placed into the appropriate containers.
  5. Yard Waste Collection does not apply to us here at TCNJ because our Grounds crew collects all yard waste.
