UPDATE April 2020: (suggestions for working from home)
While working from home, please refer to the TCNJ Ergonomic Guidance for Computer Users.
To help maintain the proper posture while using a laptop, it is recommended to create distance between the monitor and the keyboard/mouse.
A tablet may be able to be used as a make-shift second monitor, allowing you to display a document or file to refer to while using a computer- please see the recommendations in the above document for using multiple monitors.
Try to create a dedicated work area with a chair that provides support (and is comfortable), and if necessary, use a foot rest (folded blanket) if the chair and table are too high for your heels to be flat on the floor.
The TCNJ Ergonomics program is intended to address an employee’s work-related concerns, and to help to prevent the occurrence of discomfort and injuries while at work. Such injuries usually occur over time (e.g. “chronic”) and are commonly pain to wrists, neck, and back, among other areas, as well as tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Please see the TCNJ Ergonomic Guidance for Computer Users for information to help you set up your work area to promote proper posture while using a computer. It can be used for your work area on campus, as well as while working from home.
The College offers ergonomic assessments to help address concerns. The assessment helps to determine any recommendations for you.
To request an ergonomic assessment, please use the Work Order system to “Submit a Ticket”.
After scheduling an assessment, you may be asked to complete the computer user Ergonomic Questionnaire. This questionnaire will be reviewed with you during the assessment. (do not include it with the Mid-Year Request)
If you have any questions regarding ergonomics, please contact the Occupational Safety Specialist, Brian Deitch, via email at deitchb@tcnj.edu.
Persons with disabilities or who are seeking reasonable accommodation for medical reasons are encouraged to contact the Accessibility Resource Center to identify suitable accommodations and services. Any such requests, questions, difficulties, or concerns should be referred to that office.
